I stopped asking my bakery students for cake, because once they started giving it to me I felt embarrassed.
Though the wheedling may cease, the cake is offered evermore. The thing is, when they gave me this cake they didn’t know it was my second-to-last day teaching them. But now they know, and they are really nice people, so I wonder if they are in a cake-lemma now. ‘It’s her last day, but we can’t give her cake because we just did’ vs. ‘She obviously wants a motherton of cake, let’s just give her another cake and let God sort it out.’ Maybe I’ll write to the Ethicist on their behalf!
