Merbie Interviews the Season: A Grape Hyacinth, part 3

Merbie: And do you feel more like a grape or more like a hyacinth, yourself?

Grape Hyacinth: That is certainly the big question for any grape hyacinth, I think. It’s something we all struggle with. Who am I—who am I really?

Merbie: I see, I see! Well, I certainly wish you safe travels on your journey inward; now, we’ll turn to my favorite book for our last question. The Book of Questions wants to know, Grape Hyacinth, if a new medicine were developed that would cure arthritis but cause a fatal reaction in one percent of those who took it, would you want it to be released to the public?

Grape Hyacinth: I don’t find that particularly controversial, Merbie.  Of course such a powerful medicine should be available to those who need it. The real question is would you tell the public about this one percent fatality rate, and my answer is no: arthritis is such a highly contagious disease that I think we all have a duty to protect each other, whether we choose to or not.
